Of Silence: A Visual Score
August 12, 2010 In case you missed it at the Kultura exhibit at the Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts + Culture, I've posted a sneak peek of my book "Of Silence" in the ART section. The book is part 2 of an on-going project with Robert Bolton based on a poetic essay and song he wrote. The work examines silence — its liminality, its spritual significance, its role as artistic muse and its inherent incompatibility with commerce — as a space for contemplation and resistance. For this book, I've created a visual score to accompany the song of the same title (lyrics by Robert Bolton, music by Alexander The). The score/graphic notation routes a sonic cartography of the Toronto's loudest intersections, translating urban noise and its absence as text and image.
The book is available for purchase in a limited edition of 5 prints, with an accompanying audio CD of the song "Of Silence" in 4 different versions (featuring the work of Sarah Shafey, PSBEUYS and of course, Times Neue Roman).
